Premier League transfer round-up: Liverpool resist Coutinho bid

After a long, long summer, the Premier League is finally back!

Arsenal beat Leicester on Friday night at the Emirates to kick off what promises to be another season of entertainment.

Still, the transfer market remains very much alive and kicking ahead of deadline day later this month.

Barcelona remain fixated on landing Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho, though the Reds are insistent their prized possession is not for sale.

Arsenal look no closer to resolving the Alexis Sanchez saga while Antonio Conte's search to strengthen his 'small' squad continues.

Further abroad, PSG are said to be closing in on Monaco's Kylian Mbappe in a £163m deal - a mere week after forking out nearly £200m for Neymar.

Jurgen Klopp has hinted that Liverpool will not let Philippe Coutinho leave the club to join Barcelona because it is too late in the transfer window to replace him. The Reds have so far rejected two approaches from the La Liga giants for the playmaker and were forced to release a statement on Friday morning insisting they would not let Coutinho leave the club.

After a mostly admirable comeback like that, a jubilant Arsene Wenger was in the right kind of mood for an admission about match-winner Olivier Giroud he might not have otherwise made.  “I opened the door for him at some stage because I know it's important for him to play…”

Jose Mourinho has confirmed Manchester United are in talks with Zlatan Ibrahimovic about signing for the second part of the new season. The 35-year-old scored 28 goals in his debut season at Old Trafford before suffering cruciate knee-ligament damage in United’s Europa League quarter-final second-leg win over Anderlecht last April.

Arsenal have been relatively quiet on the transfer front this summer, although the business they have done looks shrewd enough.

Jurgen Klopp has insisted that Liverpool will only sign their first-choice transfer targets and if they fail to do so, will not go for a “plan B, C or D”. The Reds have already brought in Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson and Dominic Solanke but have been left frustrated in their pursuits of their other top targets.
