Monchi: Sevilla technical director considering La Liga exit amid Manchester United rumours

Monchi, Sevilla’s celebrated sporting director, is reportedly considering his position after a fall-out with the club’s directors.

The 47-year-old former goalkeeper has overseen a decade of success on and off the pitch at the La Liga club, with nine trophies won and a profit of around £152million earned on players.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Monchi is now on the verge of quitting after rowing with members of Sevilla’s hierarchy and cancelling several media appearances.

Ivan Rakitic, Dani Alves and Sergio Ramos are just three players to have been nurtured and then sold on at sizeable profits during Monchi’s time at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, which has coincided with the club winning five Europa League titles.

The success has earned him a reputation as one of the game’s outstanding directors of football and he has been linked with several Premier League clubs over the last few years, including Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

According to AS, some of the rumours surrounding his departure suggest that he may have received a ‘dizzying’ offer from United, though reports are conflicting.

The Spanish daily sports newspaper also claim that Jose Mourinho, United’s new manager, and the club’s hierarchy are ‘knowledgeable’ about Monchi’s work at Sevilla.

In March, the Portuguese coach was said to be keen on bringing a director of football with him to Old Trafford, with Atletico Madrid’s Andrea Berta mooted as a potential candidate.

Rumours of Monchi's potential departure come as Everton continue to circle around Unai Emery, the Sevilla manager.

Last week, the club's president, Jose Castro, ruled out the possibility of Emery replacing Roberto Martinez at Goodison Park, telling reporters: “I can tell you he has said he is not on the market, and is not thinking about anything else.”
