Zlatan Ibrahimović has reiterated his desire to one day return to first club Malmö as reports continue to suggest a reunion with José Mourinho at Manchester United is imminent.

The out-of-contract Paris Saint-Germain striker, 34, is expected to sign at Old Trafford in the coming days but could be swayed by a last minute offer from elsewhere despite already having rejecting lucrative moves to China and the United States.

Upon returning to his hometown with the Sweden national side ahead of the European Championship next month, Ibrahimović repeated his promise to finish his career with Malmö.

He said: “I love Malmö and I wish I could play today. I apologise for that, but I will, I will. Just wait for me.”

The former Barcelona and AC Milan striker watched from the bench as Sweden played out a sleepy draw with Slovenia but is likely to be ready to face the Republic of Ireland on June 13 at the Stade de France.

While United decided upon the merits of signing Ibrahimović, there remains a chance that he may be lured elsewhere with Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United reported to be the other Premier League clubs who have made their interest known.

Mino Raiola, the player’s agent, said last week: “We have not decided anything yet. I think it will be a surprise in the end. Everyone is harping on about only United, United, United.

“There are some clubs in England, a few clubs in Europe, clubs outside Europe, but everyone assumes that he must go to Manchester United, but it is not true. It’s not important to arrange something quickly, I care only about arranging something with quality.”
