Charlie Allison on England's Super sixes defeat to Australia

England faltered in their bid to chase down what would have been the highest-ever successful fourth-innings run chase in India, as the hosts levelled the series with an 106-run victory.

Zak Crawley got England off to a strong start at the top of the order after they resumed day four on 67 for one, following the wicket of Ben Duckett in the evening session of day three.

However, the wickets began to tumble. It was a case of starts but without big scores, aside from Crawley’s 73, no established England batter got close to a half century, and continued to struggle against the skill and speed of Jasprit Bumrah, who was the pick of the Indian bowlers.

Ollie Pope, who made a match-changing 196 as England overturned a 190-run deficit in the first Test at Hyderabad was out for 23.

One of England’s greatest-ever batters Joe Root was out for 16, and Ben Stokes was the result of a good piece of fielding and was run out for 11.

It would have taken something special, perhaps akin to the miracle of Headingley for England to even get close to the required 399 runs, but as the top order returned to the dressing room, it looked to become an impossible task.

Ben Stokes speaks after India win by 106 runs to level the series

Stokes: “We were full of confidence of the task that we have ahead of us whenever we turn up to a day of Test cricket.

“We knew we had to get 332 more runs and that’s what we had in our minds. I suppose the thing for us was asserting our authority very early and letting the Indian bowling attack know how we were going to go about our day.

“Trying to not let them settle and make it as hard as we possibly could for them. Credit to Rohit the way that he led and credit to the bowlers, that every time that we were dragging momentum back towards us and felt like we were getting on top of them, they were able to do something to take a wicket and pull us back.

“I’m really pleased at the way that we were able to find ourselves in a pressure situation, and chasing runs down in India is never easy, but we were able to go out there and stick to everything that we are.”

Stokes on 41-year-old James Anderson: “Anderson was amazing. You look at him and the way that Jasprit Bumrah this week, you are watching two incredible bowlers. Jasprit is obviously on the opposing side but sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and say, what a player. But Jimmy is exactly that as well.”

Stokes added: “I thought today, we applied ourselves and put their bowlers under pressure and it was great. Congratulations to India, obviously we ended up on the wrong side of the result, but it was another great game to be a part of.

“There’s no suggestion from me about how people should go out and play. It’s about how you feel comfortable playing on the day and at the time. We knew the task ahead of us but every player in that dressing room is a quality player, good enough to judge the situations and the conditions.

“It wasn’t a challenge [dealing with three inexperienced spinners]. Looking at them, five or six Tests between them, to bowl the way they did yesterday without Joe - what they produced was incredible. They showed a lot of maturity and skills beyond their years and I am very proud of them.”

Ben Stokes speaks after India win by 106 runs to level the series

Ben Stokes said: “I think coming into this last innings we had full belief in ourselves that we could go and chase it down, the way we go about taking on challenges like that it’s what we’re about. The number of runs we needed to get was just another thing for us to chase down.

“When there is scoreboard pressure we know that’s when we get the best out of ourselves as individuals.

“Congrats to India I thought they played a great game.”

Some more quotes from Jaiswal, firstly on the game plan: “We just focussed on our game, getting into those good areas, focussed on our processes and played well.

On his own performance, he added: “My intent was to look to score runs and face as many balls as I could and continue to build my innings.”

Steve Finn sums it up on TNT Sports: “Jasprit Bumrah has won his side the game. He should be the man of the match.”

On Ashwin and Bumrah, Jaiswal said: “Of course, I think the way Bumrah bowled it was incredible to watch. Even in the slips it was amazing, it was coming so quickly.

“He bowled so well in the first innings and in the second innings, it was wonderful to watch.”

Jaiswal: “Of course it was a wonderful feeling. It’s always one of the best moments when you win a Test for your country and I really enjoy it.

On the pitch: “I think there was a bit of cracking and there was a bit of seam (movement) if you can see, it’s quite hard at that point of time to play in the fourth innings and that’s all I can say.”
