A doctor has gone viral on TikTok for suggesting that wearing socks in bed can improve your sleep.

Dr Jess Andrade, who goes by DoctorJessss on the platform, said that she often wears socks to bed at night and has found it has hugely benefited her sleep routine.

“So let’s talk about people that wear socks to bed,” she says in the clip, which has been viewed more than 16 million times, before going on to explain how her trick works.

“Wearing socks makes the feet warm and this opens up the blood vessels that cools the body down.

“The body being cool tells the brain that it’s time for bed so actually people that wear socks tend to fall asleep faster.”

Dr Andrade went on to explain that she didn’t invent did not simply make this sleep hack up, but said that it comes from research published in the journal Physical Behaviour in 2006 that examined the impact foot temperature can have on sleep quality.

“In adults, sleep-onset was accelerated by warm and neutral bed socks after lights-off and correlated to the increase in foot temperature,” the study concluded.

However, other TikTok users aren’t quite as convinced as Dr Andrade that this is a good tactic.

“I can’t breathe if I wear socks to bed,” one viewer commented.

However, others found it strange that it wasn’t seen as normal to go to sleep wearing socks, insisting that this is something they have always done.

“Wait, people struggle wearing socks? I wear socks 24/7,” wrote one person.

Another added: “I can’t do anything without socks so YAY”.
