Letter: Union Jack abroad

Sir: If Sean Thomas ('Let's run it up the flagpole', 10 October) yearned for the sight of the national flag, he should have visited Normandy this year, where it was almost impossible to escape the Union Jack, flown to celebrate the liberation.

In countries such as France and Belgium, it is common to find flags of the 12 EU countries, and the flag of the Community. Why not here?
