Letter: Sworn-in sovereign
Sir: There is a simple solution to the problem of how to make the next coronation more meaningful to non-Christians. The religious service in Westminster Abbey should be followed by a civil 'swearing-in' ceremony in Westminster Hall. The latter should be conducted by the Lord Chancellor and the Speaker, to represent both houses of Parliament, and the new sovereign would undertake to rule in accordance with the will of Parliament.
This combination of ceremonies would not only be more satisfactory to non-Christians, but would also reflect the constitutional position more accurately.
Yours faithfully,
