Letter: Bus chaos: legal diversions, surplus and scarcity
Sir: I was first brought to Sheffield as a child in the Twenties, though I did not actually live in the city until the Fifties. My experience of the local transport therefore extends well over 60 years, though not in any official capacity, merely as an ordinary member of the public who used it extensively.
I can endorse the picture of chaos since deregulation as drawn by Christian Wolmar and would love to see a return to a properly integrated, well-maintained and efficient service operated by local authorities - which is what we used to have.
It seems crazy to me, in this age of computer-controlled technology in all walks of life, that anyone could even consider reverting to a free-for-all pandemonium.
Yours faithfully,
D. F. ASHFORD
