For those who already have the Eagles' Hotel California on vinyl, cassette tape and CD, the question now arises: would you like to hear all those old favourites in ever better quality sound than you have ever heard them before? And would the same apply to the rest of your music collection?

The music industry obviously hopes so, not least because the new technology carries with it the hope of a much better defence against piracy (and, of course, another way to flog those lucrative back catalogues). However, there must be a limit as to how often consumers can be persuaded to update their record collections, and, indeed, how close to perfection a hi-fi sound can be before it encounters diminishing aural returns. Let's be honest: is it really worth spending £12.99 on a DVD when the sound is so crisp that it makes you nostalgic for the worn, pock-marked LP you sold to a second-hand shop for 50p?
