The music industry obviously hopes so, not least because the new technology carries with it the hope of a much better defence against piracy (and, of course, another way to flog those lucrative back catalogues). However, there must be a limit as to how often consumers can be persuaded to update their record collections, and, indeed, how close to perfection a hi-fi sound can be before it encounters diminishing aural returns. Let's be honest: is it really worth spending £12.99 on a DVD when the sound is so crisp that it makes you nostalgic for the worn, pock-marked LP you sold to a second-hand shop for 50p?
