Empty legs: Virgin Atlantic’s domestic airline, Little Red, is filling seats from Heathrow to Scotland with a short-term seat sale. Just in time for the Fringe, there are returns to Edinburgh for £97 – the lowest BA fare is £111. To Aberdeen, Virgin’s fare is £99 (£150 on BA). Book by 9 July for travel between 15 July and 1 September (virgin-atlantic.com).

Autumn sale: BA’s seat sale is also on until 16 July, but most of the bargains are for travel in the autumn and beyond. Flights from London City to the Andalucian gem of Granada cost £151 return on some dates in October. A three-night stay in New York is available for £549pp, with accommodation at the Jolly Madison and Heathrow flights. Valid for off-peak dates between now and 10 June 2014 (ba.com/sale).

Blues cruise: Bon Voyage has two epic “musical road trips” through America’s Deep South, that travels along the Mississippi Blues Highway, with stops in Atlanta, Nashville, Memphis, Natchez, New Orleans and Montgomery. The 10-night break departs on 10 August and 30 September, costing £1,695pp with convertible car hire, rooms in historic inns and flights from Heathrow or Manchester to Atlanta (bon-voyage.co.uk).

Offshore charm: The Isles of Scilly offer quiet sandy beaches, palm-strewn gardens – and high prices, which makes the current offer from Premier Holidays so good. Right through summer, until 14 October, a four-night break with breakfast at St Mary’s Hall on Porthcressa Beach costs £349pp, including the ferry crossing from Penzance and one dinner (premierholidays.co.uk).
