Travel question of the day: Simon Calder on how Brexit might affect a holiday to Spain this summer
Have a travel question that needs answering? Ask our expert Simon Calder
Q My family and are due to go on holiday to Fuerteventura in July. If we were to vote to leave the EU, would it make any difference to our trip?
Trevor Smith, Somerset
A As with almost all questions to do with the referendum, the answer isn’t as crisp as you might like. It is: “possibly”.
You and I have no idea how British holidaymakers might be regarded abroad in the event of a decision to leave. I don’t for a moment imagine we would be shunned, even in a pro-EU country such as Spain. But people in other European countries may well be keen to get your views on the referendum, and share theirs.
Apart from that, the logistical impact is small. If you have already bought your holiday money, and are therefore locked into a particular rate of exchange, there should be no material difference in cost. If you haven’t, then you might find that you get fewer euros for your sterling after a “leave” vote. The Treasury has forecast that the pound would lose 12-15 per cent of its value - not just against the euro, but against other major currencies.
If you think it likely that the UK will vote to leave, then you might want to buy your euros now. But then if we stay in, and the pound bounces back, you will be worse off. So it’s a bet.
For the other aspects of your trip, there should be no change. If the result revealed on Friday morning shows a majority in favour of leaving the EU, the UK’s departure would not take effect for at least two years. In the interim all relations with EU countries will remain legally exactly the same. Your passport, driving licence and European Health Insurance Card will continue to function exactly as now, and the rules on mobile roaming will remain the same this summer. Even the EU-wide elimination of roaming charges next June will take effect.
