Songs of 'Grease' feature in new game for Wii and DS

The songs of hit musical Grease are heading for a September 2010 release on the home console and its handheld counterpart, the Nintendo DS.

Grease: The Game promises 16 songs from the 1978 film such as "Summer Nights," "You're The One That I Want" and "Greased Lightning." The game's publisher is also hinting that it will in some form include the Thunder Road race and various diversions from the Rydell High School graduation carnival.

Many recent karaoke and music games on the Wii have appealed to a wide audience by selecting tracks from across the last five decades of pop.

For example, though most of Just Dance's tunes were from the 1980s and 90s, it couldn't omit the classic theme from Fame, "Eye of the Tiger," or "Le Freak." Band Hero captured "Pretty Woman" and "YMCA" among others, Lego Rock Band included "Kung Fu Fighting" and "We Are The Champions," and The Beatles Rock Band harvested ditties from 14 Beatles albums of the 1960s.

Grease: The Game, makes use of Wii Fit's Balance Board as well as Wii-compatible microphones to track players' dance moves and vocal stylings.

The Brighton, UK-based development studio Zoë Mode is in charge of Grease on the Wii, and has plenty of previous experience in the genre with the SingStar karaoke games on PlayStation 2 and 3, and Dancing with the Stars on PS2 and Wii.

Big Head Games, which squeezed 10 of those 16 songs into the DS version, is best known for Elefunk on the PlayStation 3, and won a Bronze Award from PocketGamer for its iPhone game Hollywood Hotel.
