The 20th anniversary versions of the PlayStation 4, styled after the original console, are selling for thousands of pounds on eBay after they sold out in minutes on Saturday.

The nostalgia-inducing edition, which Sony announced on Wednesday to mark its 20th anniversary celebrations, originally cost €499 in Europe and $499 in North America. But the company only made 12,300 of the commemorative machines, a symbolic number related to the original PlayStation’s release date.

The US ones sold out within minutes of being listed on the Sony store on Saturday. Japanese fans will be able to enter to buy the competition through a lottery system, and the company has not yet revealed how European gamers will be able to buy them but says that it won’t “be available through traditional retail channels”.

There are seven listings listed as completed in the UK on eBay, with the highest-priced one having been sold from the US and costing £6,785.95, after attracting 26 bids.

Hundreds of the systems are being sold in the US, attracting prices of over $10,000.

Consoles won’t be delivered until December 21st, which means that those on eBay are actualy selling their successful pre-orders.

The number of consoles on sale suggests that at least five per cent of the consoles have been re-sold or are listed on eBay, wrote ArsTechnica.

The 20 anniversary PlayStation 4 comes in ‘original grey’, and has a controller and camera also modelled after the original console.
