Google's second edition smartphone, the "Google Nexus S," is promoted in first place on Twitter's most talked about topics list.

The internet company is encouraging people to follow @googlenexus with the promise of "news, tips and a chance to win a Nexus S phone."

"#whyrelationshipsdontlast" and "#checkmeout" are today's top hashtags, currently resting in second and third places.

The name of American Los Angeles Lakers basketball player "Derek Fisher" is in fourth place, the name of fellow teammate "Shannon Brown" is in seventh place. Tweets about the Lakers' game against fellow LA team the Clippers have also pushed "Laker" into sixth place.

Fans of Korean rapper "Choi Minho" are wishing him a happy birthday, while football fans are breaking the news that American college football coach "Urban Meyer" is stepping down as head coach of the Florida Gators.

Following the 30th anniversary of John Lennon's death on December 8, Twitter users are making fun of other microbloggers for misspelling the name of the Beatles star, saying "You can spell 'Yoko Ono' but apparently don't have the intelligence to spell 'Lenon' the correct way." "Lenon" is trending in eighth place.

"Operation Payback" is the name of a series of DDoS attacks organized by internet activists that (among other things) recently took down the websites of companies opposing WikiLeaks.

Some people on Twitter are sharing news about Operation Payback while others are using the trending topic to joke about the situation.

Tweets about Operation Payback include "Sarah Palin claims her website was hacked by Operation Payback. They say, haven't gone near it. My guess is she just forgot the password," "There are some things Wikileaks can't do.
