Ubu dies at Auteuil

Ubu III, a stablemate of the 1994 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner The Fellow, collapsed and died minutes after winning the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris at Auteuil yesterday.

French television showed the horse, who had been ridden by regular jockey Philippe Chevalier, collapsing on the track as he was being hosed down after completing the three miles and five furlongs race.

Ubu III had just given his trainer, Francois Doumen, his fourth success in the prestigious Parisian event by defeating another stablemate, Val d'Alene. Ubu III had prevailed by three lengths. It is believed that the nine-year-old suffered a heart attack.

Doumen was also represented by The Fellow, a past winner of the race, but he was pulled up.

n Apprentice Alan Daly was banned for four days, 26-29 June, for irresponsible riding on the disqualified Chakalak at Bath on Saturday.
