Andy Murray and Serena Williams to pair up for mixed doubles at Wimbledon 2019

The hugely popular duo will be one of the biggest crowd-draws at The Championships and will offer Murray a serious chance of winning another Wimbledon title

Andy Murray and Serena Williams will play together at Wimbledon in one of the most high-profile partnerships in the history of mixed doubles tennis.

Murray, who is not playing in the singles event this year as he continues his recovery from career-saving hip surgery in January, had been looking for a partner over recent weeks with several candidates mooted including the French Open champion Ashleigh Barty, and it has now been confirmed that he will play at SW19 alongside one of the greatest female players of all time in Williams.

The hugely popular duo will be one of the biggest crowd-draws at The Championships and will offer Murray a serious chance of winning another Wimbledon title to add to his two singles at the All England Club.

Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam singles winner, had earlier hinted at the possibility of partnership with the Scot to the media, saying: “If you guys really want it... all right, done.”

Murray's team then confirmed that the ‘dream team’ would be in Wednesday's draw.

While the American, 37, is most famous for her extraordinary singles CV, she has also accumulated at least two women’s doubles titles at all four grand slams, including six at Wimbledon, as well as two mixed doubles grand slam wins.

When asked earlier in the week about the prospect of playing with Murray, Williams said: "His work ethic is just honestly off the charts. That's something I've always respected about him.

"His fitness, everything. To do what he's done in an era where there's so many other great male tennis players, so much competition, to rise above it, not many people have done it. He's actually one of the few."

Murray will also be playing in the men’s doubles event alongside the French specialist Pierre-Hugues Herbert, having won the doubles title at Queen’s alongside Feliciano Lopez last month.

The mixed doubles event starts on Thursday.
