Tauziat wins DFS Classic

Nathalie Tauziat downed Miriam Oremans 6–3, 7–5 in the rain–delayed final of the DFS Classic grass court tournament in Birmingham, today for her eighth career title in what she says is her retirement year.

After Saturday's play at the Priory Club had been washed out by rain, the quarterfinals and semifinals were completed on Sunday before organizers postponed the final until Monday.

Watched by a small number of fans, the 33–year–old French veteran won her second DFS title, having also won here in 1997. She survived break points in her first two service games and snatched a break in the sixth game of the first set when Oremans double–faulted.

She then charged into a 5–1 second set lead and served for the match at 5–2 before unforced errors started to flow and Oremans hit back to break and then hold.

Tauziat then served two double faults when serving for the match a second time at 5–4 and was broken again. The top seed recovered to break back and successfully served out for the championship at the third attempt.
