One man was stabbed to death and dozens injured in fighting between rival Argentinian fans that erupted soon after their side had beaten Chile 4-0 in a Copa America match in Paysandu, Uruguay, on Tuesday evening. Many fans were taken to hospital for knife wounds.

Denis Allen, father of West Ham's Martin and uncle to Clive, Paul and Bradley, has died aged 56. He played over 400 games for Reading, Charlton and Bournemouth from 1961 to 1970. In the last two years he worked as a scout for Terry Venables. His brother Les played in the Tottenham double- winning side of 1961.

Reading have signed left-back Stephen Swales, 21, from Scarborough for pounds 70,000, with the promise of a further pounds 25,000 if he is sold on at a profit. Scarborough hope to land the striker Andy Ritchie on a free transfer from Oldham.

Lesotho have pulled out of an African Nations Cup match against Zaire on Sunday because of fears over the Ebola virus.
