Sport in Short: Rugby Union
THE ORGANISERS of last year's Rugby World Cup in the British Isles and France have reported a provisional profit of pounds 5.5m on a turnover of pounds 20m. The organisation of the month-long tournament cost pounds 7.3m and the RWC's commercial outlay was pounds 6.7m. Corporate hospitality expenses amounted to a further pounds 500,000. Russell Thomas, chairman of RWC, said: 'The five host Unions will retain the excess of gate receipts over the costs which they incurred in respect of pool and knock-out matches for which they were responsible. We do not yet know these figures. Once they are available and our own accounts have been finalised, we shall be able to consolidate both sets of figures.'
