GARY JACOBS defeated Robert Wright before the halfway stage to retain his British welterweight title in Glasgow last night. The Scottish southpaw also safely reserved his European title championship nomination by halting his opponent in the sixth round.

MICHAEL ARMSTRONG, the British super-featherweight champion, has been fined pounds 1,000 and seriously cautioned by the Boxing Board of Control, after pleading guilty to a drug offence at Manchester Crown Court in May, when he was given an 18-month suspended sentence and fined the same amount. Armstrong has kept his title, his next defence of which will be against the former champion, Floyd Havard of Wales.
