It may be the close season, but there is no end to transfer gossip. The Sunday Mirror suggests that Bryan Robson's Middlesbrough will attempt to sign Leeds United's Gary McAllister to boost their Premiership campaign, and that Manchester United are to bid for Sheffield Wednesday's former England defender Des Walker. The Mirror also says that Manchester City's Niall Quinn will sign for Sporting Lisbon this week.

The Crystal Palace defender Richard Shaw may be on the move to Selhurst Park lodgers Wimbledon for pounds 1.5m while Spurs are keen on the Queen's Park Rangers full-back Clive Wilson, according to the Sunday Express, which also says that Mike Walker is the main rival to Ossie Ardiles for the Derby County managership, and names Port Vale's John Rudge as an outside bet for the Sheffield Wednesday vacancy.

The People claims that Manchester United have made a pounds 3.5m bid for Arsenal's unsettled captain Tony Adams while the Old Trafford club may sell Lee Sharpe to Middlesbrough. The same paper suggests that Nottingham Forest's Frank Clark is the favourite to become the next manager at Highbury.

The News of the World alleges that the Italian club Sampdoria are poised to make a double bid for Manchester United's foreign legion, goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel and winger Andrei Kanchelskis. It also claims that the Crystal Palace chairman Ron Noades has interviewed his club's former manager Steve Coppell about a possible return to Selhurst Park as coach - on the condition that Noades is allowed to pick the team ...
