Racing: More pride for Pendle

Pride Of Pendle was the star equine performer of the day at Newcastle yesterday, registering victory on the 100th outing of her career.

Connections almost raised the roof of the Gosforth Park stand as the mare defeated Night Mirage in the Boots At The Metro Centre Limited Stakes.

The tough mare has won every season since her two-year-old days and was reappearing just a week after a hard race to finish third in the Schweppes Golden Mile at Glorious Goodwood.

Her trainer, Martyn Wane, said: "It's a double celebration. A victory for Pride of Pendle on her 100th outing and I've reached 10 which is my best score in a season.

"I was terrified of the small field but we had to run her off her current mark and I'm delighted it's come off.

"The owners have said this might be her last season but when you have a horse finishing third in the Schweppes you don't think about retiring."

Retirement is definitely looming for Batabanoo, one of Mary Reveley's favourites, but the old boy demonstrated plenty of zest to secure the Sandy Bay Holiday Park Handicap.

The eight-year-old, owned by Peter Savill, has won eight races over hurdles and was taking his tally on the Flat to 12.

He picked up well for Kevin Darley to lead inside the final furlong.

Epsom's evening meeting was abandoned due to waterlogging following persistent heavy rain. The rain began at around 2.30pm and was still falling when the stewards looked at the course at 5pm and 5.30pm. "There has been torrential rain and the course is waterlogged in several places," said a racecourse spokeswoman.
