Racing: Hyperion's TV Tips

CHEPSTOW

2.00: Martin Pipe excels at getting horses right for this type of event, and DAMIER BLANC, despite a dismal run at Cheltenham, can come back to take this. A danger could be Nigel Twiston- Davies's busy mare Zamirah. She has won only once from 11 attempts this season, but made a bold show last time in Cheltenham's Coral Cup. Veteran course specialist Grenagh and useful handicapper Hawaiian Youth, with Adrian Maguire in the saddle, could also go close.

2.30: SHRADEN LEADER, who has improved throughout the season, can be forgiven for running out of steam in the marathon Midland National last time. Back over a more suitable trip he can lead a procession this afternoon.

3.00: The 1993 Champion Hurdle runner-up Royal Derbi may have to surrender to youth this afternoon in the shape of top novice CORROUGE. Triumph Hurdle fifth Kadastrof can take advantage of his weight allowance to take the runner-up spot.

KEMPTON

2.40: Pat Eddery is riding powerfully in defence of his championship and ANDROMAQUE can add to the double he rode here on Saturday. Roger Charlton's stable appears to have its runners well forward. Penny Drops, capable of delivering a devastating late run, looks the danger. This mare was pulled out of the Lincoln Handicap because there was insufficent cut. She will have no problem getting her toe in today.

3.10: Paradise Navy, unplaced in the 1992 Derby, is certain to attract plenty of support after a facile victory on good going at Doncaster. But it would be unwise to take too short a price because a hefty rise in the weights will make it far more difficult in this slog through testing ground. DOYCE, available at 20-1 in some lists, gave ample evidence of her stamina credentials last season and looks an attractive each-way bet.

3.40: BOLD LEZ appears at first to be up against it in this company but he shows his best form in the spring and hails from the stable that turned out Kerrie-Jo to win here on Saturday. Another advantage is a stalls pitch near the far rails. Best drawn of all is Pat Eddery's mount Blue Bomber, but the biggest threat is posed by Midhish, who has performed creditably in Group class.

4.15: Fox Sparrow would be the obvious selection here. Lightly raced, he may well have plenty of improvement in him, yet is another likely to start at short odds in a competitive race. Double Echo won well on his first run last season and should go well again, along with Mick Channon's DOUBLE FLUTTER. A run 10 days ago will have tuned her up for this.

FAIRYHOUSE

3.55: HIGH PEAK holds several of today's rivals on his latest form and comes here fresher than most of them, including 1993 winner Ebony Jane. Both she and Deep Bramble will test how Cheltenham Gold Cup form transfers to the hurly-burly of a National five days before The Fellow may follow the same pattern, but these two are not so leniently treated here as they would be if taking their chance at Aintree.
