Britain's Tony Jacklin gave himself an outside chance of winning the Canadian Senior Open title in Ancaster, Ontario, with a two-under- par third round 68 which left him four shots behind the leader Larry Mowry. Jacklin is on the four-under-par total of 206 going into the final round. Mowry, who is looking for his first victory since 1989, carded a one-under- par third round of 69 and holds a slender one-shot advantage over Kermit Zarley. Lee Trevino is poised among a trio one shot further back.

Suzanne Strudwick headed the British challenge after the second round of the Edina Realty Classic in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, carding a four- under-par 68 to lie two shots behind the Swedish leader, Carin Koch. Strudwick, from Cheshire, was on the seven-under-par total of 137 and was the only British player in contention going into the final round. Edinburgh's Catriona Matthew missed the cut.

Retief Goosen, of South Africa, won the inaugural Slaley Hall Northumberland Challenge by two shots yesterday, but he was pushed all the way by Scotland's Ross Drummond. Nine strokes adrift of the overnight pace, 39-year-old Drummond started well from the fourth hole with an eagle and stayed on it as he shaved a shot off the course record of 66. The Scot birdied the next four holes before dropping his only shot of the day, when he missed the green at the ninth. More birdies at the 10th and 12th put further pressure on 27-year-old Goosen, who had led by six early in his round, but a birdie at the short 16th made a final round of 72 for him and clinched the tournament just ahead of Drummond, with England's Robert Lee finishing third with a 72.

Sweden's Sophie Gustafson won her maiden American Express Tour victory when she fired a closing round of 69 to win the Deesse Swiss Open at Maison Blanche near Geneva yesterday. Gustafson, 22, collected a pounds 12,000 winner's cheque when her 12-under-par total of 280 left her one stroke ahead of Britain's Lisa Hackney with Lotta Eliasson-Wharton, another Swede, and Patricia Meunier-Lebouc from France sharing third place on 283.
