Leeds have released Alan Tait, the 32-year-old former Widnes and Great Britain full-back. The former Kelso and Scotland union centre, who played for the Scots at RL, has had his contract terminated by mutual consent. "I hope to finish my career by being involved in junior rugby union development in Scotland," he said.

Salford, newly-promoted to the Super League, have signed the sprinter Peter Maitland, who has been playing for Bridgend RU Club and was a target for Cardiff, on a twelve-month contract.

The Wigan stand-off Nigel Wright is set to return to full training next week after a 14-month injury spell which began when he snapped ligaments in his right ankle. He has since undergone four operations.
