McGhee angered by fans' abuse

Oldham Athletic and Reading made sure of staying in the Endsleigh League First Division with clear home victories last night.

Goals in each half from Lee Richardson and Gerry Creaney gave Oldham a 2-0 win over promotion-chasing Stoke City, who will now have to beat Southend at home in their final game on Sunday to be sure of a play-off place. Reading beat Wolves 3-0, with their joint player-manager, Jimmy Quinn, scoring twice.

The Wolves manager, Mark McGhee, received a barrage of abuse from Reading fans who are still angry with him for leaving the club 18 months ago. McGhee said: "I am very upset by the reception I received. It's a disgrace and I have done nothing to deserve it. I couldn't care less if Reading go up or down - I left them in a good position." He added: "If we come here at the end of next season and send them down, I will be quite happy to do that."

Charlton Athletic edged towards a play-off place with a barely deserved 0-0 home draw against Tranmere Rovers.

Crewe confirmed their place in the Second Division play-offs with a 2- 1 victory at home to Peterborough. Bradford failed to get the win they needed to confirm a play-off place when they drew 1-1 at home to Swindon.

Liverpool won the first leg of the FA Youth Cup final, beating West Ham 2-0 in front of a crowd of 15,725 at Upton Park.

n Brighton have been guaranteed one more season at the Goldstone Ground after the Second Division club agreed a one-year deal with the developers who own the ground. York City's 1-0 defeat at home to Chesterfield last night means Brighton will almost certainly have to replay their abandoned home match with York, who could still be relegated.
