As Lawrie Smith failed to finish any of the four races he started and did not start the fifth, Australia's Rob Brown, with four firsts and a second, yesterday won the opening Prudential Grand Prix for 18ft skiffs in strong westerly winds at Falmouth.

Gerry Roufs is set to win the monohull class in Newport, Rhode Island today of the Europe 1 Singlehanded Transatlantic Race from Plymouth. But second to his 60-footer Groupe LG2 should be Italy's Giovanni Soldini in the 50ft Telecom Italia with another Italian, Vittorio Malingri, third in Anicaflash. Britain's Pete Goss, with 542 miles still to go, lies fourth in the 50-foot Aqua Quorum.
