James' century adds to record

Hampshire's 35-year-old all-rounder Kevan James wrote himself a piece of cricket history by adding a century yesterday to his feat of taking four wickets in four balls against the Indian tourists at Southampton on Saturday.

No other player in the history of the game has matched James's achievements - the last player to take a hat-trick and score a century in the same match was Mike Proctor of Gloucestershire in 1979.

James, who began the day on two not out, went on to reach his second century of the season in three and a half hours. He hit three sixes off the Indian spinner Narendra Hirwani and 10 fours before he was caught at long-on for 103.

James shared in a stand of 175 in 49 overs for the third wicket with the opening batsman Jason Laney, who made the second century of his career. Laney made his hundred in three and a half hours before being caught.
