Spence keeps up pursuit of Dier

Jamie Spence hated every minute of last week's Open championship, but was enjoying himself at the halfway stage of the TNT Dutch Open here yesterday.

Spence compiled a second-round 64 for a 10-under-par total of 130 and a share of second place with the Australian Peter Lonard, three behind the overnight leader, Tobias Dier of Germany, who added a second-round 67 to his record-equalling 60 on Thursday.

Mark Roe was a shot behind Spence and Lonard after matching Spence's 64, following three birdies in the last four holes, alongside Ireland's Padraig Harrington and Gary Evans – who both missed out on a play-off for the Open by a shot last Sunday. Two shots further back was the Ryder Cup Swede Pierre Fulke.

Spence, one of the nine players to have shot a 60 on the tour when coming from 10 shots back in the final round to win the European Masters in 1992, had an eagle at the 12th and the 18th to be back in 30, after covering the back nine in 29 shots in the first round.

"I hated every minute of last week, " he said. "I was in three different rooms in three nights. I was offered a room for £330 by the R&A which I wouldn't put my dog in.

"I was last off in the first round and clapped in by the bin men and security guards at 9.25pm, couldn't get in the back door of the locker-room and when we left there was not a soul in the clubhouse so you didn't feel like you were playing.

"It sounds like sour grapes but I did play badly last week. It is a great golf course though."

Nick Faldo had an eagle at the 12th on his way to a second consecutive 68 to lie four under, alongside Lee Westwood who showed encouraging signs of a return to form with a 66.

John Daly was a shot further back after a 67 while the defending champion, Bernhard Langer, just made the halfway cut on level par after a 69.
