GOLF: Mouland in groove

Mark Mouland moved closer to his first European Tour victory for seven years in Majorca yesterday. He added a 69 to his opening 67 to lead the Turespaa Balearic Open by two strokes from Costantino Rocca.

Rocca's 67 included a left-handed shot from a bush at the eighth, his 17th hole. The attempted recovery rebounded off a tree and left him no nearer, but he made a curling 15-footer for his par five and holed from 10 feet at the last to cut Mouland's lead.

With Pedro Linhart, the joint leader after the first day, stumbling to a 74 and Fredrik Lindgren suffering two double- bogeys after reaching seven under, third place is shared by Ross McFarlane and Greg Turner.

Turner put himself in line for a £3,000 prize for the course record with a 65 containing an eagle and six birdies. The New Zealander began the event by four-putting the first green. But he is now back in the running for a third European Tour success.

McFarlane, who emblazoned his ball last Sunday with "England Grand Slam 1995", has changed to "MUFC - Red Devils" this week. His father, Noel, played for Manchester United.
