DAVID FROST, of South Africa, yesterday shot a one-under-par 69 to beat Australia's Greg Norman by one stroke and win the Greater Hartford Open with a course record.

Norman birdied the final two holes, making excellent approach shots and three-foot putts to put pressure on Frost, but he responded by sinking a tap-in putt to win with a 12- under-par 268.

Frost birdied the 15th and 16th holes, but bogeyed the 17th to set up the tight finish. He hung on for his first victory of the year and ninth career triumph.

Canada's Dave Barr finished third equal on 271 with Steve Stricker, Corey Pavin and Dave Stockton Jnr, whose father won the PGA Senior Championship the same day.

GREATER HARTFORD OPEN (Connecticut) Leading final scores (US unless stated): 268 D Frost (SA) 65 68 66 69. 269 G Norman (Aus) 69 65 66 69. 271 S Stricker 70 67 67 67, C Pavin 65 73 66 67, D Stockton Jnr 66 66 67 72; Dave Barr (Can) 68 70 68 65. 273 K Triplett 71 66 69 67, W Levi 68 66 71 68.

Helen Wadsworth, from Wales, held her game together well under pressure to score a closing 73 for a maiden Tour victory in the BMW European Masters at Bercuit in Belgium yesterday.

Wadsworth, who saw an overnight lead of three strokes cut back to one, hit back with four birdies in five holes to finish with a 14-under-par aggregate of 278 - a tournament record - three strokes clear of the American Tracy Hanson.
