Ben Crenshaw, the Masters champion, yesterday capped an extraordinary year with victory in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf at Kauai, Hawaii, when he sank a 50-yard chip for an eagle at the final hole. The improbable shot gave Crenshaw a one-stroke victory in the 36-hole event reserved for the winners of the year's four grand slam tournaments. US Open champion, Corey Pavin, and Steve Elkington, the Australian PGA Championship winner, tied for second place on 141, with John Daly finishing eight strokes off the pace.

Scotland's Colin Montgomerie, who is missing this week's World Cup in China to play in the pounds 1m Taiheiyo Masters in Tokyo, opened his account with a first round 74. Montgomerie, who clinched his third successive European Order of Merit title two weeks ago, recorded the same score as the world No 1, Greg Norman.
