Anderson extends Saints contract for two years

Daniel Anderson has given St Helens a pre-season boost by signing an extension keeping him at Knowsley Road until 2008, although he says he will definitely go home after that.

The decision puts an end to rumours about an early return to his native Australia, where he was linked with the Sydney Roosters job last year, and to any thoughts of him being tempted by the vacant Great Britain role.

"I'm thoroughly enjoying all aspects of coaching at St Helens," he said. "My family is also settled in England and extending my contract gives them and me added stability."

Saints won all the major honours last season under Anderson, who was both Super League and BBC Sports Coach of the Year.

Saints' one pre-season friendly, against Leigh tonight, has been postponed because of storm damage. The match was earmarked as Sean Long's testimonial.

The former technical and performance director at the Rugby Football League, Joe Lydon, is set to put his hat in the ring for a role in a revamped structure at headquarters, which will include a new, full-time Great Britain coach. Lydon has filled a variety of coaching roles with the Rugby Football Union since leaving the RFL.
