Great Britain claimed gold at the wheelchair basketball European Championships in Israel with a 76-65 victory over Germany. Some hot shooting from Simon Munn and Terry Bywater gave Britain an early lead, which they never surrendered despite a second-half fightback from Germany.

Bywater finished with a huge 30 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, while Munn had 30 points and 15 rebounds.

The title is Britain's first since they won in Paris 16 years ago, and coach Murray Treseder hopes it is a sign of things to come in London next summer. "I thought it was a magnificent team performance," he said. "We stuck to our game plan and our discipline and it showed.

"Resting Simon in other games of the tournament certainly showed as I thought he had a staggering game for a 43-year-old."

Earlier, the women had claimed the bronze medal with a 60-47 defeat of France.
