Hockey: Lee steers Britain to win over England XI

Jason Lee, the newly appointed Great Britain chief coach, ended his first week in charge after a traumatic period for British hockey with a convincing 6-1 win against an England XI at Bisham Abbey yesterday, with Jimmy Wallis and David Mathews both scoring twice.

Russell Garcia, who it had earlier been announced was not under consideration for the GB squad, had been present at Bisham all week and was yesterday one of the coaches for the England squad.

The youngest ever Olympic hockey gold medalist later confirmed his ambition was still to play for Britain in the qualifier in Madrid next March and then in Athens. "I still want to play, not coach," he said.

While Great Britian seem to have sorted out their major problems, there is disarray in the Netherlands where the Olympic champions have staged a similar revolt. At least six leading players, including the captain Jeroen Delmee and the corner striker Bram Lomans, do not want to play under the coach Joost Bellaart.

Faced with the resignation of the rest of the management team, the Dutch Hockey Board announced at the weekend that they were staying with Bellaart and had appointed the Dutch internationals Ties Kruize as manager and Marc Benninga as doctor.

Up to 12 of the 18 players in the recent European Championship in Barcelona are considering quitting.

Meanwhile, last season's women's Cup winners, Canterbury, yesterday went out in the second round, beaten 2-0 by Trojans at Southampton.
