Hockey: King beats the heat to sink Koreans

Leisa King's brilliant goal in the 55th minute gave England a 1-0 win against the fancied Koreans in their second game of the Champions Challenge in Johannesburg yesterday. England, after twice surrendering a two-goal lead, drew 3-3 with India in their opening game on Saturday.

Yesterday, in an gruelling encounter, only a string of outstanding saves from goalkeeper Hilary Rose kept England's hopes alive. A relieved England coach, Tricia Heberle, said: "It was one of the hardest games of hockey to play in – in extreme heat, at altitude and in high humidity. I was so proud of the team's performance."

Back home there was good news for England's men with the reappearance since a serious road accident last autumn of Reading's Manpreet Kochar who, clearly short of match fitness, gave an impressive display for Reading as they went down 2-3 to Surbiton in the Premier League Cup.

There were surprising defeats for Slough, the Cup holders, Clifton and Fyffes Leicester in the Fourth Round of the Women's EHA Cup. Slough, after going ahead in the 9th minute through Fiona Greenham, went down 1-2 away to Sutton Coldfield. Jane Sixsmith equalised for Sutton with Helen Morris scoring the winner.

Premier side Clifton were held to a goalless draw by Deeside Ramblers, from Division Two, who went on to win 3-2 in the penalty shoot-out, while Olton won 7-1 away at Leicester.
