England goalkeeper David James is without a club after Portsmouth withdrew their offer of a new contract, although Celtic are interested in bringing him north of the border. "We held out for him for as long as we could," said David Lampitt, the Pompey chief-executive. "But we've got three weeks until the start of the new season and we need to continue the rebuilding process."

Neil Lennon, Celtic's new manager, is considering the 39-year-old as a replacement for Artur Boruc, who left for Fiorentina last week. Following contact with James's agent Lennon said: "The fact he is interested is very encouraging from our point of view. He will come up and have a look and see if he fancies it." It is far from a done deal, though, as James has also been linked with Tottenham and Fulham, who face losing their first choice, Mark Schwarzer, to Arsenal.

Eduardo yesterday completed his £6m move to Shakhtar Donetsk from Arsenal on a four-year contract after successfully overcoming a medical with the Ukrainian champions. Shakhtar's Romanian coach, Mircea Lucescu, said: "We wanted to buy Eduardo before he moved to Arsenal. Not everything went his way last season, but he is still a player of very high quality, a real marksman. Yes, he had a serious injury, we are aware of the risk, but at the same time we realise he can give a lot to Shakhtar. We expect a lot from Eduardo."

The Wigan defender, Titus Bramble yesterday underwent a medical at Sunderland ahead of a proposed £1m move. The Blacks Cats' manager, Steve Bruce, is keen to link with up with the defender he had at Wigan. The 29-year-old was suffering from a foot injury at the end of last season, but is expected to be back before the start of the new season on 14 August. Personal terms have yet to be agreed between the player and the club but it is expected the move will go through today. The 28-year-old will then join up with the squad in their pre- season tour in Portugal.

Buying a central defender has been one of Bruce's main priorities all summer. He originally made a move for Manchester City's Nedum Onouha, but balked at the asking price.

Sunderland are still after Sol Campbell, but the 35-year-old will decide on the future when he returns from his honeymoon. The club are also close to completing the signing of Argentinian full-back Marcos Angeleri.

Bournemouth

Rhoys Wiggins has become the Cherries' seventh summer signing after joining for an undisclosed fee from Norwich City. The 22-year-old spent the last two seasons on loan at Dean Court and has signed a two-year deal.

Arsenal

Francis Coquelin has signed a new "long-term" deal at the Emirates Stadium. The 19-year-old, who made just three first-team appearances last season, will now join French club Lorient on a season-long loan as he looks to gain valuable first-team experience.

Sheffield United

The Blades have secured the loan signing of Nyron Nosworthy from Sunderland, where the 29-year-old centre-back was told he was surplus to requirements by manager Steve Bruce. He rejoins the Championship club after making 19 appearances while on loan with the Bramall Lane side last season.

Manchester City

Goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen has signed a one-year extension to his contract at Eastlands, which will keep him at City until at 2012. The 22-year-old will now join League One's Tranmere Rovers for a six-month loan spell.

Internazionale

Centre-half Andrea Ranocchia has joined Inter from rivals Genoa. The 22-year-old, who missed out on a place in Italy's World Cup squad, has signed a five-year contract, but the two Italian clubs have agreed he will remain at Liguria for the coming season.

Huddersfield

Manager Lee Clark has taken the Nottingham Forest forward Joe Garner on loan for the new season. "We're always on the lookout for young, talented footballers and Joe fits that remit perfectly," Clark said. Garner has been at Forest since 2008 and can play as a striker or a midfielder.
