Solskjaer: Man Utd have little room for error in top-four battle

Manchester United are expected to be busier than usual in the summer transfer market as they seek to revamp Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first-team squad.

Solskjaer was appointed as United’s new permanent manager last week, after reviving the club’s fortunes in a three-month caretaker spell.

But a third defeat in four games on Tuesday night at Wolverhampton Wanderers highlighted the need for new signings and for other players to be moved on.

United normally look to only make a handful of key changes to their squad each summer, but there is an acceptance this year could see more incomings and outgoings than usual.

Matteo Darmian, Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia are among those expected to depart Old Trafford come the end of the season.

Like club captain Valencia, Juan Mata and Ander Herrera are both out of contract this summer and the chances of them signing new terms for next season are diminishing.

United have been in negotiations with Mata and Herrera for almost a year-and-a-half now but salary demands are understood to still be a stumbling block in negotiations.

Alexis Sanchez's disappointing performances since his arrival from Arsenal on a free transfer last year may not be enough to save his United future either.

The Chilean, currently sidelined with a knee ligament injury, is the club's highest-paid player but has scored just five goals in 41 appearances.

In terms of incomings, United have been widely linked with Borussia Dortmund winger and former Manchester City youth product Jadon Sancho.

On Tuesday, The Independent reported that Sancho had been made United’s number one target for the summer ahead, though may cost a fee of around £100million.

Other young English talents, such as Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi, West Ham’s Declan Rice and Crystal Palace full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, could also be targeted.

Meanwhile, United remain in talks with goalkeeper David de Gea, whose contract is set to expire in the summer of 2020.

United are keen to finally tie De Gea down to renewed terms after a lengthy, 18-month negotiation process which is likely to extend into next season.
