Sir Alex Ferguson says that Arsenal have not progressed under Arsene Wenger - but there is no one better to replace him

Sir Alex Ferguson has said that Arsenal have not progressed under manager Arsene Wenger in recent seasons, but says that there is no better replacement for his old rival at present.

Wenger has come into criticism from Gunners supporters over the last few campaigns, with the club failing to win a Premier League title since 2004.

"If I hadn't progressed Manchester United after the double-winning 1994 team or the treble-winning 1999 team, I would maybe have had the same problems as Arsene is facing now,” the 73-year-old said in an interview with ESPN.

“But he's stayed with his conviction, he's stayed with what he believes in.Who are they going to get to replace Arsene Wenger, you know? Who are they going to get who is better than Arsene Wenger? And that's why they haven't sacked him, that's why they've stuck by him.”

In total, Wenger has won three Premier League titles and six FA Cups with the Gunners in his 19-year tenure with the club.

Ferguson retired from the game back in 2013.
