Mesut Ozil put in a man-of-the-match performance against Aston Villa but managed to cause some confusion with his celebration after scoring the second goal in Arsenal's 5-0 win on Sunday.

The World Cup winner produced a classy finish to find the back of the net past Brad Guzan in the 56 minute, slotting the ball low into the corner after being put through on goal.

In celebration he trotted to the corner of the pitch at the Emirates, sucked his thumb and made an 'M' with his left hand.

Social media was abuzz with speculation over what message Ozil was giving but he wasted little time after the match before taking to Instagram and explaining it was in dedication to his niece Mira.

"What a perfect day! Perfect like you, little Mira! This goal is for you! #family #niece #love #AFCvAVFC", he wrote.

Ozil's goal was the stand-out moment in an impressive performance for the former Real Madrid player amid signs he is beginning to find his best form.

Not content with the one goal though, Özil scored an early opener in the north London derby against Tottenham in Saturday, and promptly celebrated in the same manner.

The effort took Özil's record to three goals in three games since his return, and the German appears to be a player reborn having come back in scintillating form.
