Rounding off the week that Luke Shaw broke his leg is, by a weird turn of fate, a fixture between his current club Manchester United and former side Southampton.

For some, the game at St Mary's on Sunday is being seen as a great opportunity to show the collective support for the youngster. Some Southampton supporters have suggested a minute's applause by both sets of fans in the 23rd minute, the same number shirt that Shaw wears.

However, despite the apparently noble nature of the good will gesture, it might just be those in the home end taking part.

It seems that Manchester United fans think a minute's applause, an act that has become a regular fixture at football stadiums to show respect for significant former players and figures who have died, is over the top. According to many of those voicing their views Twitter, such a gesture is more synonymous with fans of bitter rivals Liverpool, who are often accused of wallowing in over-sentimentality.

Here's how United fans have been reacting to the idea...

Luke Shaw is undergoing surgery in the Netherlands today and is expected to return to England this weekend.
