Tim Sherwood embarrassed after predicting Liverpool couldn’t score winner seconds before Roberto Firmino goal

Former Spurs manager claimed Liverpool wouldn’t be able to win Andy Robertson’s 90th-minute corner — only to watch Firmino fire home the winner in their 2-1 victory at Anfield

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood was left red faced after predicting Liverpool  would not find a winner in their Premier League encounter with Spurs, seconds before Roberto Firmino headed home to secure victory.

Firmino was left unmarked in the Spurs area to score in the 90th minute and seal a 2-1 victory at Anfield that sent Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League, at the expense of Jose Mourinho’s side.

Spurs had chances to take the three points themselves, with Steven Bergwijn guilty of missing two golden chances to score and Harry Kane also mistiming a header from close-range.

But as the clock ticked down in the final minutes, Liverpool forced a corner that Andy Robertson lined up to take, just as Sherwood called the action on Amazon Prime’s Premier League round-up show.

“Another corner,” Sherwood said. “I'm not too worried about this corner.

“I mean, it might come back to bite me here but I think Tottenham have got the dominance in the air there.”

However, the 51-year-old’s confidence in his former side’s ability to keep Liverpool at bay was short-lived as Firmino peeled away from Eric Dier and Harry Kane to free himself in space and head the ball beyond the reach of Hugo Lloris.

“I'm not sure anyone can get their head on the first ball for Liverpool... apart from that one,” rued Sherwood.

The clip quickly went viral on Twitter with many comparing it to Steve McClaren’s infamous comment when calling England’s Nations League encounter with Iceland, when the former national team manager talked down their ability to threaten the Three Lions with Kolneinn Sigthorsson their only outlet - only for the striker to score seconds later.

Sherwood was almost left speechless by Firmino’s goal, but the former Spurs and Aston Villa boss was able to regain his composure enough to criticise the lack of defending from the corner.

“Oh my goodness … wow, what a header. What an incredible header that is,” he added as his fellow pundits in the studio laughed at the faux pas. “We’ll have to have a look at it again - the marking was terrible.”
