Jack Wilshere overcame a slight knock to score for Arsenal Under-21s during a league meeting with West Bromwich Albion on Monday night.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who has not played a competitive game since last summer, went down clutching his knee towards the end of the first half at Boreham Wood’s Meadow Park.

Images of Wilshere appearing to be in pain were shared widely on social media, which led to speculation that his recovery may have been hit by a setback.

Wilshere, however, recovered from the knock after receiving treatment, started the second half and went on to score an equaliser for his side, cancelling out Joe Ward’s opening goal.

The England international is hoping to return to full fitness before the end of the season and be included in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for this summer’s European Championships in France.

Wilshere’s last appearance in a competitive fixture came for his country, during the 3-2 win over Slovenia last June.

The 24-year-old subsequently suffered a hairline fracture in his left leg during Arsenal’s pre-season last August, which has caused him to miss the entirety of his club side’s campaign thus far.

Wilshere could be in line to return to first-team action this weekend, when Arsene Wenger’s men face West Bromwich Albion at the Emirates Stadium.
