Coyle rules out January spree

The manager of Bolton, Owen Coyle, admits he will not be buying his way out of trouble in January, despite his team having been stuck in the bottom three of the Premier League virtually all season.

But unlike other clubs who find themselves in trouble around the turn of the year, Coyle cannot rely on a spending spree to bring in fresh legs and will most likely look for more loan signings to liven things up.

"I've not had money anywhere I have been before," he said. "I came to the club two years ago, second-bottom of the league, and never spent a penny. We had to be inventive, bringing in Stuart Holden, Jack Wilshere and Vladimir Weiss. If you don't have money, then there are ways and means of improving your team. If we do have the luxury of spending money, then great, but it's not something I'm beating myself up about. Whatever hand you are dealt you make the best of it.

"I'm at a fantastic club with great people and we all have to make sure we get ourselves out of the dangerous area we're in."

The Swansea manager, Brendan Rodgers, remains hopeful of having Danny Graham available for Saturday's trip to Blackburn, but is likely to be without Angel Rangel at Ewood Park. Striker Graham and full-back Rangel were forced off with ankle injuries during Sunday's goalless draw with Aston Villa at the Liberty Stadium, which was overshadowed by the death of the Wales manager, Gary Speed.

The duo had X-rays on their respective injuries yesterday which confirmed neither player had suffered any bone damage, and the club's medical team will wait for the swelling to go down before being able to make an accurate assessment. Rangel's injury is the more serious of the two and he will undergo a further scan today in an attempt to determine the full extent of the problem.

Rodgers said: "It is too early to say if he [Danny] will be available for Blackburn. It could be a bit longer for Angel – maybe a couple of weeks. There was no damage on the X-ray but we need to look at his ankle ligament."

Sam Allardyce is optimistic that his defender James Tomkins will agree a new contract to stay at West Ham. Tomkins has been highly regarded this season and has been linked with a move to London rivals Queen's Park Rangers in January. Hammers' co-owner David Gold said last week that the club will turn down any approach for the 22-year-old and are determined to keep hold of their best young players.
