Arsene Wenger expresses sympathy for Chris Hughton

Arsene Wenger feels Chris Hughton's departure from Newcastle does not appear "rational".

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley yesterday relieved Hughton of his position, despite a positive showing on their return to the Barclays Premier League - which included a memorable 1-0 win over Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on November 7.

Former Magpies favourite Peter Beardsley has been given temporary charge of team affairs ahead of Saturday's Barclays Premier League clash against Liverpool.

A permanent replacement is expected to be confirmed shortly, with the likes of Martin Jol, Alan Pardew and Alan Curbishley all being linked.

Wenger accepts sometimes the decisions made by the board can leave managers and fans alike perplexed.

The Arsenal boss said: "I am sad for him and told you what I thought of Chris Hughton before we played against them, and I have not changed my mind.

"We are in a job where we depend on the decisions of the board above us.

"Sometimes it does not always look rational - but England lost the World Cup bid and that did not look rational at all."
