What can happen?

An Iceland win will put them through to the last 16 with a guaranteed top two spot. Iceland can go through in second place with a draw if Portugal lose, but will finish third if Portugal win, or if they draw and score more goals than Iceland this evening. In the event of a 0-0 for Iceland and a 1-1 draw for Portugal, it will go down to the sides’ fair play ranking to decide second place.

Austria’s situation is simple. Win and they go through either in second or as one of the best third place teams. Draw or lose and they are on the plane home.

David Alaba: The Bayern Munich player was the subject of a £38m bid from Real Madrid on the eve of this tournament. On the evidence of the two games so far at least, Madrid will be grateful that Munich turned them down. The versatile Austrian would make many people’s World XI but has underperformed badly.

This game represents a perfect opportunity to make amends, with his side still in with a strong chance of qualification.

Austria’s poor form at Euro 2016 should come as no surprise. The last time they managed to progress from the group stage at a major competition was 34 years ago at the 1982 World Cup.

Aron Gunnarsson: The Icelandic captain and Cardiff City player has had an eventful tournament. His robust play at the centre of Iceland’s midfield has helped his side to a pair of surprise draws, leaving them with a good chance of qualification.

He was also at the centre of global media attention after Cristiano Ronaldo apparently refused to swap shirts with him at the end of their Group F encounter. Having shaken off an injury to play in this decisive fixture, Gunnarsson has said it would be “a dream” to face England in the last 16.
