Hope Powell admits she did not expect to be sacked as England coach

The long-time manager of the women's senior team was dismissed after a poor European Championship

Hope Powell did not expect to lose her job as England coach on the back of a disappointing women's European Championship.

England failed to qualify from their group in Sweden and last month Powell paid the price, with the Football Association sacking her after 15 years at the helm.

But speaking publicly today for the first time since the decision was taken, Powell admitted to not expecting the news.

"No, to be honest," the 46-year-old told BBC Breakfast when asked if she knew a bad tournament would have ramifications.

"But it is what it is and I am here. I'm not in a position to talk about my former employer. it's confidential and something I don't want to discuss."

Powell accepted that her players simply "didn't perform" at the Euros and is now taking her time before considering her next move.

A move to the men's game has been mentioned before - in 2009 Grimsby were reported to be considering interviewing her - while the women's Super League could also provide an option, especially after she was overlooked for a new role within the FA.

"I was on the road for 15 years and enjoyed the job immensely. That's over, it's different, I'm adjusting and I have to get on with it," Powell said.

"I'm disappointed not to be part of the FA but they wanted a fresh outlook and I have to accept that.

"I love working in the game and hopefully there will be other opportunities. It's all very fresh, I need time off to recharge and will go from there and wait for opportunities."
