The Wollongong Wolves do not often make an impact at the top of the Nationwide First Division but Paul Reid, on a four-month contract at Bradford City from the Australian club, scored the two goals by which the Bantams beat second-placed Norwich City 2-1. The Canaries threatened throughout but had no answer to Reid's firepower as he scored a goal in each half with shots from 25 and 20 yards.

"I felt this was an ideal opportunity to put him into the side after last week's poor performance from the team," his manager, Nicky Law, said. "He's earned his chance – and didn't he take it."

Norwich substitute Zema Abbey headed in to set up a thrilling finish, but Steve Banks, the Bradford goalkeeper, saved Iwan Roberts's penalty in the dying seconds to confirm a second defeat in 22 games for the Canaries.

Sheffield United's up-and-down week has seen them rise to fourth in the division as their share price went way down. But Neil Warnock was delighted with his young side's 1-1 draw with Wimbledon at Bramall Lane, secured by substitute Carl Asaba's late equaliser. "The best result of the season," he said. "They don't know when to give up."

But the Blades' neighbours, Sheffield Wednesday, are still deep in trouble after becoming the latest victims of Watford's excellent home form. A 1-0 reverse at Vicarage Road saw the Owls drop a place and Ray Lewington's side, on the back of their sixth home win, move a place up to fifth.

After previously drawing 1-1 with the top two, Coventry City may have expected an easier time against the mid-table opposition provided by Walsall. But the Saddlers took a point from the 0-0 draw.

Richie Barker scored twice and Alan Lee grabbed his ninth goal of the season as Rotherham thrashed managerless visitors Stoke City 4-0, their first win in seven matches. "We surrendered to them," Dave Kevan, the Potters' caretaker manager, said. "I am very disappointed for the fans here and at home."

Derby County welcomed back goalkeeper Mart Poom after suspension for the trip to Millwall, but he will be missing a few more games after being sent off in the 79th minute. By then the Rams were trailing 1-0, Dennis Wise's shot from the edge of the area setting up Millwall's 3-0 victory. After Poom's dismissal for a foul, Neil Harris scored the penalty and added the Lions' third.

Switching to 4-3-3 to suit the fit players at his disposal has ended the losing run, manager Mark McGhee said. "It's not pretty or scientific, not a system I'm terribly keen on, but with the personnel we have it worked for us. Derby have a huge amount of problems themselves. Although I was not aware John Gregory had brought three under-15 players with him, it's a position a lot of clubs are in now."

A good win, too, for Wolves, who recovered from being a goal down to Grimsby Town after two minutes to finish 4-1 winners at Molineux. Denis Irwin equalised Steve Kabba's shock strike, Kenny Miller put Wolves in front and late goals by substitutes George Ndah and Dean Sturridge confirmed Wolves' supremacy.

"We said it was a long season and to start writing teams off at this stage is crazy," Dave Jones, the Midlanders' manager said. Wolves move up to 11th.

Elsewhere, Preston North End beat Reading 1-0 at Deepdale thanks to an Eddie Lewis cross and Richard Cresswell finish in the 22nd minute.

Finally, Team Bath drew 0-0 at Horsham to become the first student side to go into the draw for the first round proper of the FA Cup since 1880. If they win tomorrow's replay, the young amateurs will be at home to Mansfield Town, bottom of the Second Division and with defence that has let in 39 League goals in 15 games.
