Mick McCarthy quits Ipswich Town four games before planned departure as he announces ‘I'm out of here’
His exit was announced immediately after the club's 1-0 win over Barnsley
Mick McCarthy has announced his departure as manager of Sky Bet Championship club Ipswich with immediate effect.
The 59-year-old held a three-minute press conference after their 1-0 victory over Barnsley on Tuesday night, in which he was asked a question about the negative reaction to debutant Barry Cotter's substitution, to which he replied: “That was a disgraceful reaction but listen I won't have to listen to it again because that's my last game, I'm out of here.”
McCarthy then banged the desk in front of him and left the room, before his exit was announced by the club shortly after.
The club had earlier confirmed in March that McCarthy would leave the club at the end of the current campaign, after six seasons in charge.
But McCarthy explained after the match that he had told the club this weekend he would leave after the Barnsley fixture, regardless of the result.
“I said I would see the season out but it's been a new experience and it's not one I have been enjoying to be honest,” he told the club website.
“I have continued to do my job to the best of my ability but there is something missing and I'm not comfortable with that.
“I have had a great time here and worked with some great people and to all those who have given me wonderful support over the last five and a half years - and there are many - I want to put on record my personal thanks.”
McCarthy added that he would be “looking for a new challenge elsewhere”.
Ipswich’s win over Barnsley lifts them to 12th in the Championship table, above local rivals Norwich City on goal difference.
They sit 12 points adrift of the playoffs.
