League round-up: Cardiff and Gills take titles

Five more issues were settled yesterday – Cardiff lifted the Championship title, Bournemouth earned promotion from League One, Gillingham were crowned League Two champions, Mansfield returned to the Football League five years after being relegated as Matt Green's penalty saw them beat Wrexham 1-0 at Field Mill to lift the Conference title, while in Scotland, Partick won promotion to the Scottish Premier, crossing the line after a 2-0 win at Falkirk.

Cardiff and the Gills both drew, the former 1-1 at Burnley, the latter 2-2 at home to AFC Wimbledon, who are one of seven clubs at the bottom of League Two in fear of the drop in next Saturday's season finale.

Cardiff's manager, Malky Mackay, enjoyed the moment. "We've been [top] since late November, it's a long time to be top. I'm delighted we've had the mental strength and character to have that consistency and keep going, being relentless."

But who will join Cardiff? Two second-half goals from Troy Deeney set up Watford, third, for a 4-0 home win over Blackburn, narrowing second-placed Hull's lead to four points with two matches left. Brighton stay fourth after crushing Blackpool 6-1 on the South Coast, and Bolton are back in the top six after beating Middlesbrough 2-1.

Huddersfield beat Millwall 3-0 and moved out of the bottom three, Wolves replacing them after losing 2-1 at Charlton. Goal difference keeps Peterborough, beaten 3-1 at Derby, out of the drop zone, and the point earned by Nottingham Forest and Barnsley in a 0-0 draw helped neither Forest's play-off push nor the Tykes' relegation fight.

Bournemouth beat Carlisle 3-1 to seal promotion from Division One. Doncaster, second, lost 2-1 at home to Notts County and Brentford, third, drew 1-1 at Hartlepool. Bees' last match is at home to Doncaster.

In the Conference, a pitch invasion halted play for 25 minutes at Kidderminster when Anthony Malbon scored against Stockport. Several players were punched. When play resumed Harriers won 4-0; County were relegated.
